I tend to spend an extraordinary amount of my time at Starbucks. This is largely because I come here to study, read, watch viral youtube clips, visit with friends, or just to think. In addition to my appreciation for the cafe atmosphere, I am both mentally and physically addicted to the coffee. So, even if I don't really want or need to do any of the previously stated, I can usually find something with which to occupy myself while I sip the most euphoric hot drink on the planet!
I prefer to frequent Starbucks alone, as I feel the freedom to do as I please, sit where ever I choose, and delight my senses for however long I desire. Coming alone has it's perks. From time to time a handsome stranger will sit nearby, smile, even strike up a conversation.
Today I find myself delighted by one of these very strangers. He has come, and settled himself in the chair next to mine. Laptop, coffee, cake, and all. What I find fascinating and really quite delightful is the comfort I find in his presence. Though I do not know his name, profession, or even the tambour of his voice. The fact that he sits near me and sips a warm beverage within feet of my feet, creates for me a sense of warmth and affection, this affection: though invisible is quite powerful. I will be sad when I have to leave. Or, when he departs from me.
Pieces of my heart hope and long that he would find some reason to stop his work and inquire of me. Any interaction would be magical, the most extravagant of gifts. Hopes of such an encounter are like feasting to my spirit.
He looks Italian. His hair is dark, and is cut much trendier than most American boys I see. Although his choice of footwear indicates he probably has lived in this country for quite a while. Not much effort there.
He has a fantastic nose! It's glorious, large, and bent right at the crook. It suits him. I would have it no other way.
I simply live for afternoons like these! There is so much possibility in a stranger. He could be a great many things: perhaps charming or sarcastic, maybe talented or a wonderful dancer. Perhaps my Italian friends is a genius, on the verge of a scientific break through. Or a poet, with words that would bring me to my knees.
How, I love humanity. The hopes and longings for wisps of smiles, and grazes of limbs. I hope to have a great wealth of these memories when I am old and ripe.
